Heart of Illinois Property Services has added a new credential to the toolbox: I'm now a NORMI Certified IAQ/Mold Inspector through the National Organization of Remediators and Microbial Inspectors. For homeowners and buyers across Peoria and Central Illinois, it means the mold and air-quality testing you order from HOI is backed by one of the most established training organizations in the microbial field.
What Is NORMI?
NORMI — the National Organization of Remediators and Microbial Inspectors — is a not-for-profit trade association that has been training and certifying mold assessors and remediators since 2004. Several states lean on NORMI training for their mold licensing programs, and the organization partners with groups like InterNACHI, the home inspector association where I hold my Certified Professional Inspector credential and 25+ specialty certifications.
What drew me to NORMI is that the training doesn't stop at mold. The “microbial” in the name is deliberate: the coursework covers the wider world of indoor contaminants — bacteria, particulates, VOCs, and odors — and the conditions that let them take hold in a home. That maps exactly onto the work I already do here: mold testing with lab-verified air and surface samples, and Air Quality / Particle ID testing when a client wants to know precisely what's floating around in the air they breathe.
What the Certification Means for Your Inspection
A recognized standard behind the sampling: when I pull air samples with the Breeze ET Lite pump or swab a suspect surface, the protocol behind it now carries NORMI's assessment training on top of my IAC2 and IICRC credentials. Samples still go to the lab for independent analysis, with results typically back in 24 hours.
Better answers, not just numbers: a spore count without context doesn't help anyone. The point of assessment training is interpreting what a result means for a specific house — why the count is elevated, where the moisture is coming from, and what actually has to change before remediation can hold.
An independent set of eyes: I test and assess; I don't sell remediation. NORMI certifies both inspectors and remediators, and its standards draw a clear line between the two roles. When HOI hands you a Certificate of Mold Analysis, there's no incentive behind it except getting the answer right.
Where This Fits in the Credential Stack
The NORMI Certified IAQ/Mold Inspector credential joins the InterNACHI CPI certification, IAC2 indoor-air-quality certification, IICRC Water Damage Restoration certification, and Illinois state radon licensure. Each covers a different link in the same chain: water gets in, materials stay wet, biology takes over, and the air in the house changes. The more of that chain an inspector is trained to read, the earlier a problem gets caught — and thermal imaging is still included on every HOI inspection to spot the moisture before anything grows.
